The future market for coal brought 25 witnesses to a field hearing in Blacksburg, Virginia. The witnesses represented the Export-Import Bank, DOE, electric utilities, the International Energy Agency, manufacturers, railroads, and other parties concerned with unemployment in the coal-mining regions and the economic opportunities that would result from expanded coal use and trade. There was an emphasis on the importance of coal to the economy and well being of the state, as well as on the importance of using the latest technology for mining, transporting, and using coal in order to protect the environment. A policy of government-industry cooperation could help to improve the stagnant growth of the coal market. An appendix with additional material submitted for the record follows the testimony.
