A two-day hearing held in response to Senate approval of S.267 encouraging slurry pipelines focused on whether to designate the pipelines as common carriers, how to regulate them, how they will affect rail rates and employment, and how vertical integration and its cost will affect consumers. Witnesses from the Slurry Transport Association, the Association of American Railroads, the Interstate Commerce Commission, agricultural organizations, regulators, and railroad unions presented their views. Additional material from the trucking, cattle, and railroad industries and other interested parties follows the testimony. (DCK)
