Exploration, development and reservoir engineering studies for the Tapis field offshore peninsular Malaysia

The Tapis field is located in the South China Sea, 130 miles off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia in 210 ft of water. Tapis is the largest field Esso Production Malaysia, Inc. has developed for Petronas, and its 1981 production rate of 70,000 stb/day accounted for ca. 25% of Malaysia's total oil production. Development plants for the field have been modified due to data obtained from ongoing exploratory and development drilling. The producing reservoirs at Tapis are Miocene age sandstones which contain rim-type oil accumulations with associated gas caps. The 3 primary reservoirs are shoreface/barrier bar deposits separated from one another by shale sequences. Both faulting and stratigraphic variations cause localized discontinuities across the field. Ten exploration wells and 70 development wells have delineated most of the field. Four platforms have been set and development drilling on 3 of these is complete. Produced casinghead gas will be reinjected into the gas caps, and waterflooding will serve as the ultimate displacement mechanism. Two fieldwide reservoir simulation studies have helped to optimize field development.
