The Tapis field is located 130 miles off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the South China Sea where water depth averages 210 ft. The field was discovered in July 1969 by the drilling of Tapis 1 (an exploration well located near the crest of the structure) which encountered gas in the Miocene J and K Group sands. Delineation wells subsequently drilled downdip of the structure confirmed the existence of a commercial oil accumulation in the J sands. As further delineation drilling on the structure continued, development efforts were initiated concurrently on the proven portion of the field. Ten exploration/delineation wells have been drilled on the structure and 80 development wells have been complete on 4 platforms. The field currently is producing ca 60,000 bopd and represents the largest field that Esso Production Malaysia Inc. has developed as a contractor to Petroliam Nasional Berhad, the national oil company of Malaysia.
