Coherent production of. mu. /sup +/. mu. /sup -/. pi. /sup -/ systems in. pi. /sup -/Cu interactions at 50 GeV/c

A simple method is proposed for study of the rho/sup 0/..pi.. system in diffraction dissociation of ..pi.. mesons, which is based on identification of the rho/sup 0/ meson on the basis of its muonic decay mode. The measured cross section for coherent production of the 1/sup +/S wave of rho/sup 0/ and ..pi../sup -/ mesons with mass 1.0< or =M0..pi../sup -/< or =1.2 GeV is sigma = (2.1 +- 0.1)x10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2/ per copper nucleus in the reaction ..pi../sup -/+Cu..--> mu../sup +/+..mu../sup -/+..mu../sup -/+Cu at momentum 50 GeV/c.
