CHP for landfill site turns liability into asset

An innovative gas-fueled engine application at two landfill sites is coming up to full power output in the United Kingdom. Two worked-out sandstone quarries just outside Wigan in Lancashire have been accepting pretreated waste for nearly a decade from the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal authority. It was realized at an early stage that, because of the pretreatment of the refuse, large quantities of landfill gas (LFG) would be generated within a short time of landfill starting. Already producing some usable process heat for an adjoining fish farm, the landfills will eventually be the basis for a full-scale combined heat and power (CHP) set-up. 3 figs.
