The concept, needs and efforts in social forestry in India are described. Social forestry is seen to be the production of trees over scattered lands wherever tree growing is possible. Such farm forestry aims at tree culture in association with agriculture and can provide relief for farmers by enabling them to be self-sufficient in firewood, small timber and fodder. Additional benefits include the possibility of selling extra firewood, achieving soil stability and conserving water. It is pointed out that much work has been done in this area in Haryana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. It is noted that one hectare of plantation activity can generate 150 to 500 man-days of employment during the first 3 years, thereby contributing to alleviating problems of unemployment. 13 references.
