The need for a stable forest policy in India to reduce deficits and increase multiple benefits of forests and plantations is discussed. A brief review of the current demand for forest products in India indicates the importance of plantation forest for social and environmental reasons as well as for production of raw material for industry. The case is made for greater investment in economically viable individual plantations as distinct from plantations established under social forestry programs.
