Enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature of TlSr sub 2 CaCu sub 2 O sub 7 by yttrium and vanadium substitutions

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (USA)

Superconductivity at 105 K has recently been observed in a family of compounds (tl{sub 1{minus}x}M{sub x})Sr{sub 2}(Ca{sub 1{minus}y}Y{sub y})Cu{sub 2}O{sub 7{minus}{Delta}}(M = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta). An interesting feature is the enhancement of T{sub c} in the parent TlSr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 7} compound via substitution of high-valent 3d transition metals; this is in contrast to other high-T{sub c} cuprates investigated so far. The effects on crystal structure and electronic properties of yttrium and vanadium doping in the metallic, but not superconducting, TlSr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 7} compound are described. The new high-T{sub c} superconductor, (Tl{sub 0.5}V{sub 0.5})Sr{sub 2}(Ca{sub 0.8}Y{sub 0.2})Cu{sub 2}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}, exhibits a current density of 1.5x10{sup 7} A/cm{sup 2} at 5 k and 1 T for sintered material which is comparable to that observed in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} and YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8}.
