Pacific Northwest-Southwest intertie, now under construction, is the largest single electrical transmission development ever undertaken in the US, and the largest high voltage direct current system yet conceived. It carries with it new concepts in transmission cable. The basic advantage of dc for high voltage power transmission lies in the fact that two conductors, or only one, are required for a dc circuit, as against three conductors for a three phase ac circuit. In addition, a dc circuit can operate at higher voltage for a given basic insulation level.
