An investigation was made into the principal parameters affecting the coking process in a ring oven. The factors studied were the following: 1) the temperature of the arch region of the oven at the moment of charging, 2) the rate of rise of this temperature, and 3) the depth of the charge bed. Also studied was the reducing capacity of the experimental coke for manganese and silicon oxides in synthetic charges. It was concluded the reducing agent produced in the ring oven was significantly superior to the metallurgical coke presently used in its chemical activity and specific electrical resistance. The use of the experimental coke significantly improves the reduction of manganese and silicon in the 1400 - 1600 degrees Celsius range. Included were six tables of data and two illustrations.
