A brief review of the problems encountered with modern poor quality diesel fuel is presented. Several organizations' involvement with fuel quality testing programs is discussed, as shipboard fuel treatment systems for classical and modern heavy fuel oils. Series and parallel operation of the two separators is considered with the series mode chosen as the more simple and reliable. A chart is given showing some chemical treatments for fuel problems. The steps to prevent costly repairs are listed and discussed.
