Focused ultrasonic backscatter technique for near-surface flaw detection in structural ceramics

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5681063
This paper describes a focused ultrasonic backscatter technique that is currently being used at Argonne for the detection of near-surface flaws in ceramic modulus-of-rupture (MOR) bars. The technique exploits the generation of leaky surface waves in such a way that precise transducer positioning is not critical; for this reason, it is a potential candidate for the inspection of curved surfaces. Included in the presentation of results are the detection of near-surface flaws in Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ MOR bars, and a correlation of NDE and fractography results after failure in four-point bending. 5 refs., 7 figs.
