Failure prediction of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ ceramics by NDE (nondestructive evaluation)

Results are presented for the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and fractographic observations of the critical flaws in hot-pressed Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ with Fe inclusions. The NDE methods employed included low-energy contact radiography with digital image enhancement, through-transmission ultrasonic, and backscatter ultrasonic imaging. A comparison of NDE and fractography results indicate that the backscatter ultrasonic method may be more suitable than low-kV contact radiography for the detection of near-surface flaws.
