Book ·
OSTI ID:5678678
This book provides a broad view of the interrelationship between energy demands, resource limitations, and environmental pollution, and illustrates the important contribution that recycling has made and will make in solving these problems. It shows how waste treatment can be achieved at a much lower cost than at present through materials and energy recovery. It begins with an explanation of the philosophy of resources recycling and a review of the factors influencing its feasibility. The physical, chemical, and microbiological methods of separation and recovery are described. Applications of these methods are described in detail for post-consumer waste, including municipal waste, and for industrial and agricultural materials. The thermodynamics of recycling are considered. The following appendices are included: (1) recycling by elements; (2) recycling review publications; (3) addresses of organizations; (4) glossary of scientific terms; and (5) bibliography.
