Fermentation to ethanol of xylose present in biomass byproduct solutions. Progress report, April 1, 1981-July 31, 1983

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5676658

During the period of support by this grant, we have isolated and sequenced the gene for E. coli xylose isomerase and have achieved expression of the gene in the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We have also observed that, paradoxically, the xylose isomerase gene is transcribed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae but the corresponding protein cannot be found. Although the S. pombe transformant strain does not ferment xylose, it provides a basis for further experiments directed toward xylose fermentation by yeasts.
