MoSi{sub 2} - {beta}{prime} SiAlON particulate ceramic composite
- Energy Research Corp., Danbury, CT (United States); and others
Particulate ceramic composites composed of a combustion synthesized {beta}{prime} SiAlON matrix and dispersed MoSi{sub 2} particles were hot pressed at 1600{degrees}C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The physical and mechanical properties of the composites containing 30 vol% MoSi{sub 2} were evaluated. The average four-point bend strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness (HV) of the composites were {approximately}500 MPa, 4 MPa{radical}m and 12 GPa, respectively. Fracture toughness of the combustion synthesized {beta} SiAlON (2.5 MPa{radical}m) was enhanced by the added MoSi{sub 2} particles. The composites showed improved electric conductivity and oxidation resistance over the monolithic {beta}` SiAlON.
