This is a report on our code calculations in support of shock-tube experiments that are now in progress at CalTech. The primary purpose of the experiments is to study the evolution of perturbations and the subsequent mixing when a shock passes through the interface between two gases. The Richtmyer-Meshkov instability causes initial, i.e. pre-shock perturbations at an interface between two fluids to grow after the passage of the shock, much the same way as the Rayleigh-Taylor instability acts in a constant gravitational field. 13 refs., 46 figs.
