Measurement of the total cross section for e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}hadrons at {radical} (s) =10.52 GeV

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R{equivalent_to}{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}hadrons)/{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}})=3.56{plus_minus}0.01{plus_minus}0.07 at {radical} (s) =10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of {alpha}{sub s}(10.52 GeV)=0.20{plus_minus}0.01{plus_minus}0.06, or {alpha}{sub s}(M{sub Z})=0.13{plus_minus}0.005{plus_minus}0.03. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
