Deepwater drilling support with manned vehicles
An effective rig support diving system is capable not only of finding and observing the work site but also of performing manipulative tasks for intervention. Deep-water drilling support tasks defined as a minimum must include the following: site and bottom survey prior to spudding in, guidance of packages and tools for entry and re-entry work, marine riser inspection from surface to the seafloor, AX ring replacement at depth, acoustic beacon replacement, emergency blowout preventer (BOP) stack or package release, setting wellhead charges for well abandonment, recovering dropped BOP and drill string, cut and replace guidewires, cut bent guideposts, remove corrosion caps, and extended observation during critical drilling sequences. While some of these tasks involve emergency intervention, the majority of tasks are complementary to the drilling program. An effective deep-water rig support diving system should become an integral part of the drilling operation and the primary underwater tool.
