Photoproduction of pion pairs in the Coulomb field of a nucleus

The possibility of an experimental study of the photoproduction of pion pairs in the Coulomb field of a nucleus (the reaction ..gamma..A..--> pi pi..A) is considered. The total cross section for photoproduction of charged- and neutral-pion pairs is estimated in the theory of broken chiral symmetry. The results of the calculations show that these processes can easily be experimentally investigated with the presently available ..gamma..-ray beams. Of special interest are experiments on neutral-pion photoproduction in the nuclear Coulomb field, which, besides allowing the measurement of the ..pi../sup 0/-meson polarizability, provide a unique opportunity for determining the parameters of the low-energy pion--pion interaction.
