Some aspects of EV safety

Experience in operating a new generation of electric vehicles has uncovered several hazards. These hazards have made apparent the importance of safety in the design and operation of electrical propulsion systems and their associated equipment. A discussion of batteries focuses on prevention of battery explosions, charging/venting systems, battery topping-up systems, handling of battery packs, and safe working with high voltage. Electronic control systems are considered in terms of fuses and circuit breakers, electromagnetic radiation, and effects on cardiac pacemakers. Such aspects of electric vehicles as regenerative braking, parking brakes, complete vehicle testing, noise level, heating, and driver controls are described.
