As casing strings on ultra-deep wells increase in size and depth, a need for a larger ram type blowout preventer has developed. Presco Systems designed and manufactured a stack of 30-in., 3,000 psi working pressure ram type blowout preventers. This stack has been used in critical and ultra-deep well applications and has potential application as an additional solution to diverter problems. The first 30-in., 3,000-psi ram BOP was conceived, designed, built and tested in 1 year. The second and third identical units were completed within 2 months of the first. This rapid development was a product of modern and accurate design methods, quality materials and manufacturing processes, and advances in pressure testing technology. After preliminary hand calculations, the rough blowout preventer design was checked using finite element analysis and a computer model. With information from this computer model, the BOP design was modified and reexamined. This design was acceptable and found to meet the criteria of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. A 30-in., 3,000 psi flange did not exist prior to the design of this BOP. A BX flange was developed for this connection and was designed based on API BX flange design criteria.
