Fluctuation-dissipation dynamics of the formation of the energy distribution of fission fragments

The fragment kinetic-energy dispersion sigma/sup 2//sub E//sub k/ is computed in a description of the fission dynamics of an excited nucleus by the Fokker-Planck equation for the quantum distribution function for two collective coordinates: the distance rho between the centers of mass of the prospective fragments and the neck parameter h: and the conjugate velocities. The effect of the magnitude of the inertial and frictional parameters on sigma/sup 2//sub E//sub k/ is studied. The statistical-model result is obtained as the limiting case of strong friction for the fission degree of freedom. The results of the dynamical model are obtained in the limit of negligibly small friction for both degrees of freedom. The role of the state of nonequilibrium of the fission process, as well as the dependence of sigma/sup 2//sub E//sub k/ on the fissility parameter of the compound nucleus and the definition of the rupture configuration (the fission line), is investigated.
