Extremely high single-step deuterium enrichment factors (..beta..) were measured in the CO/sub 2/ laser photolysis of trifluoromethane near 10.3 ..mu.. by irradiating a prepared mixture of /sup 12/CDF/sub 3///sup 13/CHF/sub 3/ and determining the /sup 13/C content in the product C/sub 2/F/sub 4/. With 30 J/cm/sup 2/ peak focal fluence incident on 200 mTorr CHF/sub 3//20 Torr Ar, ..beta.. was > 20 000 for lambda> or =10.25 ..mu.. and decreased monotonically toward shorter wavelengths. ..beta.. was observed to decrease at higher laser fluences.
