Chloromethylation of asphyalthene concentrates of petroleum

Journal Article · · Pet. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

It was shown that chloromethylation of asphalthene concentrates is an extremely rapid reaction with a low energy barrier; polychloromethyl derivatives contain 16 to 30% chlorine. The activity of Friedel-Krafts catalysts in chloromethylation and the competing reaction of condensation of chloromethyl derivatives decreases in the order FeCl/sub 3/ > ZnCl/sub 2/ > SnCl/sub 2/ > SnCl/sub 4/ > AlCl/sub 3/ > TiCl/sub 3/ > TiCl/sub 4/ > SbCl/sub 3/ > SbCl/sub 5/. Strong and weak basic anion-exchange resins (powdered) were obtained by amination of chloromethylated products, these resins having a considerable rate of ion-exchange, high dynamic, kinetic characteristics and high radiation resistance. 2 figures, 2 tables.
