SYNTHESIS OF INORGANIC POLYMER HIGH-TEMPERATURE FLUIDS. Progress Report No. 4, March 1961-May 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4058150

Investigation of phosphonitrilic chloride polymers stabilized against high-temperature polymerization by bonding to various metal halides was continued. Examples of metal halides which react with PCl/sub 5/ and NH/sub 4/Cl to give thermally stable (PNCl/sub 2/)/metal halide liquids were extended to include SnCl/ sub 4/, FeCl/sub 3/, CuCl. and TlCl. MgCl/sub 2/, CdCl/sub 2/, PbCl/sub 2/, and AgCl failed to give stabilized products. Preparations of (PNCl/sub 2/)/sub n// AlCl/sub 3/, (PNCl/sub 2n//SbCl/sub 3/, and (PNCl/sub 2/)/sub n//Z nCl/sub 2/ were further investigated. A new (PNCl/sub 2/)/sub n//SbCl/sub 3/ compound was obtained. and several (PNCl/sub 2/)/sub n//ZnCl/sub 2/ liquids of varying viscosity were prepared. Two new aryloxy phosphonitriles were prepared. Neither had satisfactory fluid characteristics, but they may serve as intermediates to more desirable fluids. (auth)
