Radiation-induced mobility of lithium and sodium in alpha-quartz

The radiation-induced release of the charge compensating ions Li/sup +/ and Na/sup +/ from the substitutional aluminum impurity in ..cap alpha..-quartz has been investigated by measuring the growth of the infrared active Al--OH/sup -/ center as a function of sample temperature during irradiation. It was found that Li/sup +/ is released 10--15 K lower in temperature than Na/sup +/.
