Much of the technology incorporated in U.S. waste-burning plants originated in Europe. The lack of available landfill space, increasing concern for the environment, and the high cost of imported energy have spurred many European countries to build substantial numbers of municipal solid waste and special waste incinerators. Today, nations in the European Community (EC) operate 524 incinerators for municipal and industrial wastes. About 27 million tons per year (76,000 tpd) are burned. The article is divided into following areas: Germany leads in incineration; R and D includes sludge combustion; German air pollution control regulations; West vs dry APC systems; Various APC strategies; Spray-dryer system use; Technologies on display.
