Volume conservation in the Nilsson model and effective many-body forces

It is shown that the Nilsson prescription for calculating equilibrium deformations of nuclei under the constraint of constant volume is equivalent to a Hartree mean-field approximation applied to nucleons interacting via many-body forces. Such an interaction is obtained in closed form, having a Taylor expansion beginning with the familiar quadrupole-quadrupole interaction.
