A separation method for the isolation of hydroaromatic compounds from synthetic fuels was developed. The method uses a dual column of picric acid-coated alumina over alumina to achieve class separation into aliphatic hydrocarbons, hydroaromatic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-containing polycyclic hydrocarbons. Column parameters, including percentage picric acid and water, were optimized. The procedure was applied to a moderately hydro-treated coal liquid product.
