Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5650358

The 1984 health physics survey was sent to 68 institutions. Sixty-two of them reported data from active programs. Total enrollment in undergraduate and graduate health physics or radiation protection programs increased in the fall of 1984 by 13% over 1983. Undergraduate enrollment rose by 5% to 400, and graduate enrollment increased by 22% to 805. The number of bachelor's degrees awarded in 1984 increased by 7% over 1983 to 146, master's degree awards increased by 11% to 181, and doctoral degrees increased by 14% to 50. 29% of bachelor's graduates intended to continue their studies. The largest employer of bachelor's and doctoral degree graduates was medical facilities; and at the master's level, nuclear utilities represented the largest employer. The second largest employer of bachelor's was nuclear utilities, of master's was medical facilities, and of doctorates was US academic institutions. Foreign national enrollment at the undergraduate level remained about the same as 1983. Statistics are also given for women and minorities, and regional distribution.
