Title: Nuclear engineering enrollment and degrees, 1984: data summary

The 1984 nuclear engineering survey included 71 academic institutions. Sixty-six responded that they have active programs. Enrollments at all degree levels decreased in 1984 from 1983. Undergraduates and master's candidate enrollments decreased by 3% each, and doctoral enrollments decreased by slightly less than 1%. Bachelor's degrees awarded in 1984 increased from 674 in 1983 to 728. Doctoral degrees awarded also increased over the past year from 124 to 132. Master's degrees awarded decreased from 325 to 316, 19% of the bachelor's went to work for nuclear utilities, while 18% elected to continue their studies. Continued study represented the largest placement category for master's (29%). Nuclear utilities (15%) and other industrial (14%) were reported as employing the most master's. Placement for the largest portion (20%) of Ph.D.s was unknown. Other industrial was the largest employer of Ph.D.s (19%); and US academic was the second largest employer of Ph.D.s (14%). The largest placement category reported for foreign national bachelor's and master's was continued study. Nineteen percent (23 out of 123) of the master's foreign nationals went to work in foreign countries. Foreign employment was also the largest placement category for Ph.D.s. Other statistical data breakdowns include women and minorities, and regional distribution.
