The electric utility industry is expected to announce a multi-million dollar research program looking into several challenging aspects of underground transmission. The announcement follows action by the Electric Research Council in accepting the recommendations of its task force on underground transmission. Areas to be covered by the new research program include 138 to 750 kV underground cables and related splicing; dielectric materials; and possible application of cryogenics and microwave to underground transmission systems.
