High voltage underground transmission to be studied in $17-million project

Announcement is made of a research project on high voltage underground transmission. Under the contemplated program, Westinghouse Electric Corp. will develop an underground cable testing station on company property. The major part of the funds for the project will provide for the following work: (1) construction, rental, and operation of a cable testing station designed for testing cables from 138 volts to 750 kV; (2) installation and testing of sample 500 kV cables 1500 ft long; (3) installation and testing of 1500 ft long samples of 138 kV cables with extruded insulation; and (4) development of synthetic insulated 500 kV cables.
