Chromate is a fundamental constituent of many cooling tower corrosion inhibitor programs. Chromate removal or recycle from cooling tower blowdown water to meet environmental standards is discussed. Chromium can be removed from cooling water blowdown by: chemical reduction and precipitation; electrochemical reduction and precipitation; ion exchange; and reverse osmosis. Blowdown softening with lime and soda ash is described. (4 diagrams, 2 tables)
