Refinery water reuse process optimization
System design for internal and ''end-of-pipe'' water reuse procedures, in which the major portion of refinery wastewater is returned to recirculating towers, covers ranges from the establishment of an initial information base to organizataion of bench and pilot studies. For internal schemes involving cooling tower sidestream softening, this includes a cooling system survey, evaluation of system water chemistry with emphasis on calcium hardness, silica, and the use of chromate and nonchromate corrosion inhibitors, and mathematical calculations for determining material balance, chemical concentrations, and flow rates for tower blowdown. For ''end-of-pipe'' systems, design includes the establishment of an initial information base, a refinery process unit survey, flow measurements, chemical analyses, upgrading and modification of the existing water and wastewater treatment systems, and bench-scale and pilot-plant tests. Lime-soda ash is a very effective water reuse treatment process in site-specific situations when the removal of calcium hardness and/or silica is required.
