Quasi-free pion single charge exchange

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5638327
Cross sections for the quasi-free (QF) region for pion single charge exchange (SCX) were measured with beams of 475 MeV [pi][sup [minus]], 500 MeV [pi][sup [+-]], and 400 MeV [pi][sup [minus]], with most data at 500 MeV [pi][sup [+-]]. The LAMPF [pi][sup 0] spectrometer and a proton detector arm were placed on each side of the beam with different scattering angles. Up to twelve targets, from hydrogen to bismuth, were used. Both inclusive and coincidence measurements were performed. The extraction of peak shape and cross section for the QF peak, the effective number of nucleons involved in the reaction, mass dependence, and angular dependence were studied for the inclusive measurement. Calculations with the local random phase approximation (RPA) were used to understand the inclusive experimental results. A collection of experimental results is given for both inclusive and coincidence measurements.
