Capital requirements for pipeline construction in the US and Canada over the next 15 years are expected to total 50.8 billion dollars (1975 dollars). Capital requirements for gas pipelines will account for 18.3 billion dollars, crude lines 4.9 billion dollars, and products lines 3.8 billion dollars. Cost of building coal slurry systems is excluded. New pipeline construction during the same period is estimated to total 52,275 miles (gas lines 23,777 miles). Product projects will exceed 18,000 miles and crude oil lines add up to 10,098 miles. Presently, more than 1800 miles of gas, crude, and product lines are under construction in the US, with another 1500 miles expected to start before 1980. Lines under construction, proposed, planned or under study in Canada are also discussed.
