Nature of the losses in generation at F/sub 2//sup +/ centers in LiF crystals

The authors investigate the decrease in generating power in a tunable lithium fluoride laser with F centers during its operation. The following reasons for decreasing power are considered: temperature quenching of the luminescence by overheating of the generation channel at a high repetition rate of the pumping pulses; reorientation of the F centers by linearly polarized pumping radiation; photodisintegration of the F centers under the influence of pumping radiation; thermooptical inhomogeneities induced in the generation channel by the pumping radiation; and induced absorption in the spectral range of generation and pumping. The investigation was made on three types of LiF crystals: LiF-(OH) in which gamma radiation was used to produce F centers stabilized by the radiolysis products of the hydroxyl; LiF in which F centers were produced immediately before the experiment by heating to 300 K the irradiated crystal; and LiF in which F centers were generated by the pumping radiation through two-step ionization.
