Q switching of a continously pumped YAG:Nd laser using a nonlinearly absorbing LiF crystal containing F/sup -//sub 2/ color centers has been investigated. The results show that the average losing power can be increased and the linear losses decreased by optimiging the radiation dose and thickness of the crystals. (AIP)
