Status of the Department of Energy's implementation of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 as of March 31, 1985
In March 1984, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources requested that GAO report quarterly on the status of the Department of Energy's progress in implementing the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982. This report covers program activities from January through March 1985 and focuses on delays in meeting key requirements of the act and the status of management initiatives taken by the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, the office responsible for implementing the act. The report also discusses the status of the Nuclear Waste Fund, the separate fund that receives fees from the owners of operating nuclear power plants and other waste-producing facilities and finances the development and construction of the nation's first geologic repository for commercial nuclear waste. During the quarter, the fund had revenues in excess of financial obligations and began investing the excess funds.
