The electrochemical formation and properties of aluminum-lithium alloys at pure aluminum have been studied in [gamma]-butyrolactone solutions with LiCl, LiClO[sub 4], LiBF[sub 4], and LiAsF[sub 6] as electrolytes. [beta]-AlLi is formed under most circumstances. A value of the rate formation of the alloy from the LiAsF[sub 6] solution was 1.5 [times] 10[sup [minus]7] g/cm[sup 2]s. Cycling efficiency of this alloy electrode with respect to lithium was 70[+-]5% and remained unchanged even after 25 cycles. The alloy formation in the LiCl, LiClO[sub 4], and LiBF[sub 4] solutions is followed by its passivation leading to a significant drop of the cycling efficiency.
