The galvanostatic method was used to study the cycling capability of lithium electrodes in 1 M LiClO/sub 4/ in propylene carbonate or gamma-butyrolactone (BL), 1 M LiCl in BL, and 1 M LiAsF/sub 6/ in a mixture of diethyl ether (90 vol. %) and tetrahydrofuran (10 vol. %). It is concluded from overvoltage-time relations that at a current density of 1 mA/cm/sup 2/ and modest amounts of charge passed through the electrode (1 C/cm/sup 2/), the anodic and cathodic processes occur via diffusion and migration of mobile lithium ions through the passivating film.
