Reflection of 10. 6. mu. m light from a laser-produced plasma
The reflection of the beam from a CO/sub 2/ laser from the hot plasma at the surface of a solid target is studied. The experiments are carried out with heating beams in the intensity range qapprox.10/sup 10/-10/sup 13/ W/cm/sup 2/. The laser pulse consists of a prepulse approx.100 nsec long, followed by a train of nanosecond pulses. For the prepulse, the coefficient of reflection into the aperture of the focusing mirror is less than a few percent, while the total reflection coefficient into a solid angle of 2..pi.. is approx.45%. For the nanosecond pulses the coefficient of the reflection into the aperture of the focusing mirror increases to approx.20%, because of stimulated Brillouin scattering. The spectrum of the incident and reflected radiation is studied. The experimental results are discussed and compared with the results from other work.
