Observation of spin flip in /sup 13/C+/sup 24/Mg inelastic scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

Evidence for spin dependent interactions in heavy ion reactions has been found in the inelastic scattering of 35-MeV /sup 13/C from the 1.368-MeV, 2/sup +/ state in /sup 24/Mg. Gamma rays emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane have been measured and vertical-barmvertical-bar substate populations deduced. At /sup 13/C scattering angles theta/sub cm/=10/sup 0/ and 21/sup 0/, probabilities for the vertical-barmvertical-bar=1 population (which is equivalent to spin-flip) are found to be 1.7 +- 0.5% and less than 0.8%, respectively.
