Short-term instability and stabilization of photomultiplier gain

The short-term instability of FEU-84-3, FEU-49B, and FEU-110 photomultipliers under high pulse loads is investigated. The dependence of photomultiplier gain on currents to 0.8 mA is studied. It is proposed that gain be stabilized under pulse loads by illumination of the photocathode, which reduces gain variation by a factor of 10-20. The instability of the dynode signals is measured.
