Compact high efficiency fuel heater with integral thermostatic control

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5632387
This patent describes improvement in a fuel heater for maintaining fuel delivered to an engine within a desired temperature range; having a body with an inlet and an outlet; heat exchanger means for delivering heat from a heat source; first fluid passage means in the body for passing fuel from the inlet to the outlet through the heat exchanger means; second fluid passage means disposed of the heat exchanger means for passing fuel from the inlet to the outlet through the body; valve means in the body for selectively directing fuel to the first or second fluid passage means; and thermostatic actuator means in a fuel path in the body in operative connection with the valve means for controlling the valve means responsive to fuel temperature. The improvement comprises: a first opening to the first fluid passage means; and a seat in the body, the second fluid passage means extending through a fluid opening in the seat, the thermostatic actuator means including an axially movable plunger rod extending through the fluid opening in the seat, the plunger rod moveable responsive to temperatures.
