Service of refractories of fused periclase-chromite in ferroalloy converters

This paper studies refractories of fused paericlase-chromite after service in a ferrochrome converter. The study shows that the wear of the refractories is caused by degeneration of periclase with the formation of spinels and silicates. Such a process develops in a 10-25-mm-thick zone and is accompanied by compacting of it. This process is identical to that described in studying the service of periclase-spinelide refractories but occurs at a lower rate, which increases the converter lining life by 50-80%.
