With considerable operating experience on the world's first compressed energy storage (CAES) plant in Huntorf, Germany, coupled with the new US demonstration plant at Alabama Electric Cooperative (AEC) to rely on, utility planners around the world are examining the technology for grid additions planned over the next 10 to 15 years. The most recent Electric Power Research Institute International Conference on CAES indicated that prototype or pilot plant facilities are now under study in Israel, Luxembourg and Japan as well as the US where near-term prospects include 300-MW installations on the grids of TVA and Southern Electric. US utility projects and Japan's pilot program are discussed.
